Operate and Maintain Chainsaws AHCMOM213

This nationally recognised course provides participants with the knowledge and skills to safely operate and maintain chainsaws for a range of applications, including land management, agriculture, horticulture, and construction industries. The course covers correct techniques for cutting, trimming, and felling small trees, along with essential chainsaw maintenance practices to ensure safe and efficient use.

Learning Objectives

By completing this course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand WHS requirements for chainsaw operations.
  • Select and prepare chainsaw equipment safely.
  • Operate a chainsaw to cut, trim, and fell small trees.
  • Apply safe cutting techniques to reduce risks and improve efficiency.
  • Conduct routine maintenance, cleaning, and storage of chainsaws.
  • Identify hazards and implement appropriate risk controls.

Course Content

  • Workplace health and safety requirements.
  • Chainsaw components, functions, and safety features.
  • Pre-start inspections and preparation.
  • Safe operating techniques for cross-cutting, trimming, and felling.
  • Sharpening, cleaning, and maintaining chainsaws.
  • Hazard identification, risk assessment, and emergency procedures.
  • Environmental and site considerations for chainsaw use.

Assessment

Assessment is competency-based and includes:

  • Written/oral knowledge assessment.
  • Practical demonstration of safe chainsaw operation.
  • Observation of maintenance and safety practices.

Certification

Upon successful completion, participants will receive:

  • Statement of Attainment for AHCMOM213 – Operate and Maintain Chainsaws.
    This is a nationally recognised unit of competency under the AHC Agriculture, Horticulture and Conservation and Land Management Training Package.

Course Duration

  • Typically 1–2 days, depending on learner experience and site requirements.
  • Includes both classroom theory and practical training with assessment.

Prerequisites

  • Must be at least 16 years of age (18 recommended for industry work).
  • Basic English literacy and numeracy skills.
  • Participants must provide valid photo identification.
  • Appropriate PPE is required (safety boots, high-visibility clothing, gloves, hearing protection, eye protection, and chainsaw protective clothing such as chaps).
