This nationally recognised unit provides participants with the knowledge and practical skills required to safely operate a rigid haul truck used in civil construction, mining, and quarrying operations. The course covers planning, preparation, inspection, and safe operation of rigid haul trucks to transport materials efficiently while maintaining compliance with workplace health, safety, and environmental standards.

Learning Objectives

By completing this course, participants will be able to:

  • Plan and prepare for rigid haul truck operations.
  • Conduct pre-operational checks and identify equipment faults.
  • Safely operate rigid haul trucks in various site conditions.
  • Load, haul, and dump materials safely and efficiently.
  • Apply hazard control measures and environmental protection practices.
  • Perform shutdown, refuelling, and routine maintenance tasks.

Course Content

  • WHS legislation, site procedures, and operator responsibilities.
  • Pre-start inspections and routine maintenance.
  • Safe driving techniques for rigid haul trucks.
  • Loading and dumping procedures.
  • Working safely around other plant and site personnel.
  • Managing environmental risks including dust, spillage, and uneven ground.
  • Shutdown, parking, and housekeeping procedures.

Assessment

Assessment will include:

  • Written and/or oral knowledge testing.
  • Practical demonstration of rigid haul truck operation.
  • Observation of adherence to safety and operational requirements.

Certification

Successful participants will receive a:

  • Statement of Attainment for RIIMPO338E – Conduct Rigid Haul Truck Operations.
    This is a nationally recognised qualification under the RII Resources and Infrastructure Industry Training Package.

Course Duration

  • Typically 2–3 days, depending on prior skills and experience.
  • Includes classroom-based theory, practical training, and assessment.

Prerequisites

  • Minimum age: 16 years (18 recommended for industry employment).
  • Basic English literacy and numeracy skills.
  • A valid White Card (CPCWHS1001 – Prepare to Work Safely in the Construction Industry).
  • Appropriate PPE must be worn (safety boots, high-visibility clothing, hard hat, gloves, eye protection).
