Licence to Operate a Bridge and Gantry Crane (Class CB) TLILIC0016

This nationally recognised course provides participants with the knowledge and practical skills required to safely operate a bridge and gantry crane. These cranes are commonly used in workshops, warehouses, factories, and industrial sites to move large and heavy loads. The course covers planning, preparation, load handling, signalling, and shutdown procedures in compliance with workplace health and safety standards. Successful completion leads to eligibility for a High Risk Work Licence (Class CB) issued by your state or territory regulator.

Learning Objectives

By completing this course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand WHS legislative requirements and operator responsibilities.
  • Conduct pre-operational checks and equipment inspections.
  • Plan and prepare lifting operations using a bridge or gantry crane.
  • Safely operate cranes to lift, transfer, and position loads.
  • Work effectively with doggers, riggers, and signalers.
  • Identify hazards and implement risk control measures.
  • Shut down and secure crane equipment after operations.

Course Content

  • WHS regulations, codes of practice, and site requirements.
  • Pre-operational inspections and routine servicing.
  • Crane operating techniques for different load types.
  • Safe use of lifting gear and attachments.
  • Load estimation, lifting principles, and stability.
  • Communication methods (hand signals, radios, etc.).
  • Emergency procedures and fault reporting.
  • Post-operational checks and housekeeping.

Assessment

Assessment will include:

  • Written and/or oral theory knowledge test.
  • Practical demonstration of bridge and gantry crane operations.
  • Observation of compliance with WHS requirements and industry standards.

Certification

Upon successful completion, participants will receive:

  • Statement of Attainment for TLILIC0016 – Licence to Operate a Bridge and Gantry Crane.
  • Eligibility to apply for a High Risk Work Licence (Class CB) through the relevant WHS authority.

Course Duration

  • Typically 3–5 days, depending on learner experience.
  • Includes classroom-based theory, practical training, and final assessment.

Prerequisites

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Basic English literacy and numeracy skills.
  • Valid photo identification for licensing purposes.
  • Current White Card (CPCWHS1001 – Prepare to Work Safely in the Construction Industry) may be required.
  • Participants must supply and wear appropriate PPE (safety boots, high-visibility clothing, hard hat, gloves, eye protection).
