Conduct Roller Operations RIIMPO317F

This nationally recognised unit equips participants with the essential skills and knowledge to safely and effectively operate a roller—also known as a compactor—in civil construction and earthworks settings. It’s tailored primarily for those in site-based operational roles.

Learning Objectives

Trainees will learn to

  • Plan and prepare roller operations, including hazard assessment and selection of suitable equipment
  • Perform pre-operation checks and manage on-site safety
  • Operate rollers to achieve effective compaction
  • Prepare the roller for relocation—such as loading and transporting
  • Clean and maintain both the  plant and the work area

Course Content

The program typically includes modules on:

  • Operational planning and interpreting job requirements
  • Safety protocols, risk  identification, and personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Equipment familiarisation, handling controls, and pre-start inspections
  • Practical roller operation techniques for compaction, maneuvering, and diagnostics
  • Procedures for relocating roller machinery
  • Post-operation housekeeping and documentation

Assessment

Assessment is delivered via:

  • Theory knowledge checks, which may include calculations
  • Practical demonstrations, where skills are applied in realistic, hands-on scenarios Some RTOs require supplementary training for activities like safely loading and unloading equipment (e.g., completing or assisting in RIIHAN308F)

Certification

Successful participants receive a Statement of Attainment for RIIMPO317F. Many providers  also issue a wallet-sized competency card upon completion

Duration

Courses typically run a

  • One full day for individuals with minimal experience
  • Half-day formats may be available for experienced operators with a completed logbook (subject to RTO policy)  

Prerequisites

Common entry requirements include:

  • Minimum age: 17 or 18 years, depending on the provider
  • Valid photo ID and a Unique Student  Identifier (USI)
  • Basic English language,  literacy, and numeracy skills—with LLN support available where needed
  • Appropriate PPE: steel-capped boots, long     pants, long-sleeved shirts, hi-vis vest, etc.
  • Some RTOs request a “Fit for Work”certificate if physical limitations are a concern
