This nationally recognised course provides participants with the skills and knowledge required to safely operate a vehicle loading crane (capacity over 10 metre tonnes). Often referred to as a truck-mounted crane, this unit is essential for operators responsible for loading and unloading heavy materials using cranes mounted on vehicles. The course covers pre-operational checks, load handling, safe operation, and shutdown procedures in compliance with workplace health and safety regulations. Successful completion leads to eligibility for a High Risk Work Licence (Class CV).

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand WHS legislative requirements and operator responsibilities.
  • Conduct pre-start checks, inspections, and maintenance of vehicle loading cranes.
  • Safely set up, stabilise, and operate a crane over 10 metre tonnes.
  • Read and apply load charts to ensure safe lifting.
  • Attach, secure, lift, move, and position loads using correct rigging techniques.
  • Communicate effectively with team members using standard signals and radios.
  • Implement risk management and hazard control strategies.
  • Shut down and secure the crane after use.

Assessment

Assessment will include:

  • Written/oral theory knowledge test.
  • Practical demonstration of safe vehicle loading crane operation.
  • Observation of compliance with workplace and WHS standards.

Certification

On successful completion, participants will receive:

  • Statement of Attainment for TLILIC0024 – Licence to Operate a Vehicle Loading Crane (capacity 10 metre tonnes and above).
  • Eligibility to apply for a High Risk Work Licence (Class CV) from the relevant state or territory WHS authority.

Course Duration

  • Typically 3–5 days, depending on participant experience and learning needs.
  • Includes theory training, hands-on practice, and assessment.

Prerequisites

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Basic English literacy and numeracy skills.
  • Valid photo identification (required for licence application).
  • Current White Card (CPCWHS1001 – Prepare to Work Safely in the Construction Industry) may be required.
  • Participants must wear suitable PPE (safety boots, high-visibility clothing, hard hat, gloves, and eye protection).
